Summary
Introduction
Understanding the patterns, causes, and consequences of spatial heterogeneity for ecosystem function is a research frontier in both landscape ecology and ecosystem ecology (Turner et al. 2001, Chapin et al. 2002, Wu and Hobbs 2002, Lovett et al. 2005). Landscape ecology research has contributed to tremendous gains in understanding the causes and consequences of spatial heterogeneity, how relationships between patterns and processes change with scale, and the management of both natural and human-dominated landscapes. There are now many studies in widely varied landscapes that elucidate, for example, the conditions under which organisms may respond to landscape composition or configuration, or disturbance spread may be constrained or enhanced by landscape pattern. The inclusion of a spatial component is now pro forma in many ecological studies, and tools developed by landscape ecologists for spatial analysis and modeling now enjoy widespread use (e.g., Baskent and Jordan 1995, McGarigal and Marks 1995, Gustafson 1998, Gergel and Turner 2002). Landscape ecological approaches are not limited only to “land” but are also applied in aquatic and marine ecosystems (e.g., Fonseca and Bell 1998; Bell et al. 1999; Garrabou et al. 2002; Teixido et al. 2002; Ward et al. 2002). However, with a few exceptions, the consideration of ecosystem function has lagged behind progress in understanding the causes and consequences of spatial heterogeneity for other ecological processes.
Ecosystem ecology focuses on the flow of energy and matter through organisms and their surroundings, seeking to understand pools, fluxes, and regulating factors.

Summary
Introduction
In every respect, the valley rules the stream.
Noel Hynes (1975)The challenges facing natural resource managers occur over entire landscapes and involve landscape components at many scales. Many resource managers are shifting their approach from managing resources such as fish, wildlife, and water separately to managing for the integrity of entire ecosystems (Christensen et al., 1996). Indeed, nearly all resource management agencies in the USA have recognized that informed management decisions cannot be made exclusively at the level of habitat units or local sites. It is generally accepted that ecological patterns and processes must be considered over large areas when biodiversity and ecological function must be maintained while the goods and services desired by the public are provided. For example, forest managers must determine the patterns and timing of tree harvesting while maintaining an amount and arrangement of habitats that will sustain many species. Managers of parks and nature reserves must be attentive to actions occurring on surrounding lands outside their jurisdiction. Aquatic resource managers must broaden their perspective to encompass the terrestrial and human landscape to manage stream and lake resources effectively (Hynes, 1975, widely regarded as the father of modern stream ecology and quoted above; Naiman et al., 1995). Landscape ecology also is implicit in the paradigm of ecosystem management (Grumbine,1994; Christensen et al., 1996).
Despite the acknowledged importance of a landscape perspective by both scientists and resource managers, determining how to implement management at broader scales is very much a work in progress.

Summary
A stand of forest trees is quite tangible to us; however, many of the processes that shape the biological diversity of that stand are invisible because they relate to events that have happened during some distant past or because they occur in the landscape beyond the area of forest we can see. Some scientists have called this phenomena ‘the invisible present’ and the ‘invisible place’ (Magnuson 1990, Swanson and Sparks 1990) meaning that the wrong temporal and spatial perspectives can produce erroneous conclusions. Humans and their management systems have typically perceived ecosystems at short distances and over short time frames. However, processes such as dispersal, disturbance, and succession, which control the state and dynamics of ecosystems and biological diversity, operate across a much wider range of spatial and temporal scales. This chapter is about seeing these large-scale temporal and spatial phenomena and understanding how they relate to the conservation of biological diversity.
Understanding the dynamics and heterogeneity of natural forest landscapes has become very important as management objectives for forests increasingly include the maintenance of biological diversity. Using natural or semi-natural ecosystems as a template for management is quite challenging, requiring understanding not only the patterns of forest change, but also the processes that underlie them. Recent advances in theory and empirical studies of vegetation ecology and landscape ecology indicate that if goals of maintaining biological diversity across landscapes are to be achieved in the long run, then management and conservation need to broaden their focus to include variability, scale, pattern, disturbance, and biotic processes.
